Hey guys, have you ever taken a woodworking class before or are interested in simple techniques and tips?
As an artist, I feel I have a duty to learn a lot about different processes, and woodworking is something that I admire, and wish I could work more in.

Here are examples of legs I have spun on a lathe myself:

To start you should have access to a lathe, or perhaps a drill with lathe tools (I have no idea how the drill lathes work, so I can’t help much in telling you how that works, but I did read a woodworking book from the ’60s, which mentioned how amazing drills were since they sold hundreds of attachments including lathes–if anyone knows how these work, please send photos or let me know). Along with a lathe, you should have a few chisel tools to work with, rounded tipped chisels are great, and all lathe working chisels come in different lengths and tip styles, with tips that are really round, round, curved, angled, straight, and your basic chisel tip. Having a good selection of these is really a life saver, since they can help determine the finished product and style of your work.

(if you don’t have access to a lathe check out the resource list at the end for lathes and chisel sets)

Secondly, you should have wood to work on, and decide whether or not you will be spinning something like a table or chair leg, or something like a bowl, (when spinning a leg, you will need to have both ends of the wood clamped onto the lathe hooks–but for spinning a bowl, (I’ve never done it) I believe you only need one side hooked onto the latch, but I might be wrong. Dry hardwood is best for lathe spinning, if you use softwood or wet wood you’ll need really sharp instruments (chisels). I have worked with partially wet hardwood (fallen tree/firewood in the worst type of lathe wood to work with and didn’t have too much issues, if you decide to go any of these routes you must remember to have patience throughout the whole process).

Once you have your wood and your tools then get ready for the step-by-step tip list!

Note: this is typical for spinning legs.

If you’re using a log or firewood that is square or has limbs, then it might be useful to chop them off with a saw (band saws work well if you’re careful). the goal is to get the wood into a square or as close to a circle shape as you can before you start on the lathe.

You’ll need to attach the wood to the lathe. Start by centering the wood onto the metal holders (spikes) on the lathe, and push the adjustable end of the lathe towards the wood so that it holds the log onto the lathe tightly.

Adjust you’re guard to height, and grab a chisel, turn on the machine, and blast away until you get you’re desired design. (That’s a scary quick illustration of the general process).

Are you a artist, student, or just a hobbist? Maybe you should look into interning to improving you abilities and confidence in a field of art. Many local organizations take interns, for example in MPLS if your into printmaking you join volunteer/intern at Highpoint Center for Printmaking, or if its ceramics you love then The Northern Clay Center could be a great fit. Look around your community and see what options you have. Some establishments want you to have some experience in the field, but others don’t. Look around, and see if you know anyone working or who has had experience as an intern or with the organization.

Tomorrow is the big day.
Tomorrow you will go to the toy store.
Tomorrow you will wait in line for a shiny new toy.
Tomorrow you will feel excited.
Tomorrow you will open that pretty cardboard box.
Tomorrow you will unwrap that metallic plastic bag.
Tomorrow your heart will stop.
Tomorrow you will cry—or go home happy
Which Dunny will you unwrap tomorrow?

To be honest, I never really unwrap the cute ones–and usually get stuck with the dark and gory Dunnies.

If the previous bit sounded strange or crazy to you–you’ve probably never had the experience of attending a Dunny release party. They happen usually once or twice a year at various toy shops. I’ve been to about three official Dunny release parties–all hosted by Minneapolis based RobotLove, but last December they went out of business, and the official Kidrobot re-seller contract seems to have transferred over to Fifth Element in Minneapolis, but Tomodachi in Roseville, MN is also having a release party tomorrow. They are going to be hosting the event tomorrow, and are providing refreshments and things (according to the Tomodachi facebook event page ).

I have not been to Fifth Element yet, but it should be an interesting release party, according to their facebook event page--the release starts at 6 pm.and thats pretty much all there is to know.

If you haven’t been to a Dunny release party–then you should, even if you’re not in Minnesota–there are alot of cities that host their own release parties–specific locations can be found on Kidrobot.

If you are in the Twin Cities area, go to one of the events mentioned, or go to both and have fun restocking your toy shelf.

From my past experience with them, I can definitely say that the experience is a unique one and a cultural learning experience that should not be missed.

Two weeks ago I made a visit to Chicago, but while there I noticed a Sotheby’s office, I am not sure if it was a branch of the art or their real estate, but they were advertising a few auctions in New York for pieces by Wayne Thiebaud and another popular 20th century artist.
I got to thinking, why, what, and where does the Sotheby’s empire stretch to and influence. Everyone knows about their famous auction houses, and some know of their real estate branch, and online auctions, etc. But for someone wanting to learn more about curation and art history–the Sotheby’s way, what really are the best steps one can take? I’m sure people have learned in many places and used their experience, but I just discovered that Sotheby’s runs a few Graduate programs for studying specific things related to art business and art examination. But, interestingly enough, is that these programs are located at three different locations: New York, London, and Singapore–not just one institute. Apparently these individual locations (like the location in New York) host short term non-graduate–supplementary learning courses in addition to main programs for graduates. Here’s a link to check out: http://www.sothebysinstitute.com/

I am not a graduate yet, nor am I sure this is something I am interested, it’s still a great thing to look at and be aware of if you’re an artist, or historian

Chicago is a great place to enjoy architecture. The whole architectural scene is really crazy, styles can be seen from many different cultures through the use of skyscrapers and churches, and other monuments.

Update 5/31/11: I visited Chicago a few weeks ago- as a mini-AFA graduation daytrip and had alot of fun looking at all the architecture, and comparing building styles to historical monuments.

This building for example, although not extremely well documented in this photo, lies right next to the Chicago Tribune building, and is topped with a golden dome (it’s a pretty strange sight for an American skyscraper). But, nonetheless the building style is really fun and interesting, the relief’s on the building’s sides remind me of images from ancient Persian architecture and carvings.

Ah! See the similarities?

Anyways, here’s a few more really cool buildings/interiors:

Coffers and columns inside grand central station

As most of the folks in the Twin Cities know, this weekend is the St. Paul Art crawl in lowertown. I wanted to check it out this weekend since, I have a friend showing/selling some work, but alas, finals have tied me down and thrown those ideas out the window. Nonetheless, I thought it would be a good day to update my portfolio since I finished one of my classes this week (a 3-D class at MCAD). ASnd visited a craft show in Saint Paul, as well as checked out Art in Bloom at the Minneapolis Institute of arts today. It was great, I never really went to art in bloom before, I always missed it, every year . Its a really ggreat event, but anyways check out the portfolio page

I thought it was notable to do a post about diptychs/triptychs today since my sister brought them to my attention today: she was stressing out about a assignment she had to do for photography class-making a triptych. Since I’ve had a bit of experience with diptych/triptychism myself /I stalked over to my closet to show her some examples of diptych drawings I had done in the past.

2009

Those were done two years ago now, for a beginning drawing class I had at Inver Hills, both mixed media of ink and graphite.

Before and After style diptych-2010

This more recent diptych, is my favorite of the two sets, done in a mixed media acrylic, and charcoal format. Styled and based on two different Betsey Johnson brand suitcases I own.

But, I guess the point I’m trying to make here about triptychs and diptychs is that: they can be two or three separate pieces of anything, just connected in some unifying way. Just decide on a unifying feature and go with it. It could be anything from joining three parts of one whole, telling a story through frames, highlighting on one category -like a location (think San Francisco and see three images first image: golden gate bridge, Second image: Fisherman’s wharf, Third Image: the painted ladies, etc.) Don’t limit yourself with ideas, even just grouping things by color is also a possibility as well.

Through and through, whether diptych or triptych, breaking up work with multiple frames is a great way to freshen up some work ideas.
